you’ve heard of mom friends now get ready for: Anti-mom friend. they suggest every single impulsive thought that runs thru their head like “hey what if you jumped in that pond in the middle of the night” to the group while the mom friend begs them to stop
mom friend: Bones
anti-mom friend: Jim
the one who listens to neither of them and goes off to do his own, separate idiocy: Spock
So I was looking something up for a thing I’m writing. Everyone knows how important it was to have Uhura on the Enterprise as a key member of the crew. But I hadn’t really thought about the fact that segregation had only ended two years prior to Star Trek beginning. I’m not good with remembering dates so I had forgotten that segregation ended in 1964 honestly I had thought it was a bit earlier than that.
And only two years later here is Star Trek being radical and placing a Black woman on -as bridge crew-
Of course having Uhura was wonderful for representation but she wasn’t just representation like ‘we should have more Black people on t.v.’ it was literally only two years prior that Black people weren’t allowed to use public pools, or the same restrooms and fountains as white people, that schools were divided up by race… and here is Uhura on the bridge. How powerful that must have been to have seen here there in 1966 in that social climate.
TOS gets dumped on for being low budget and at times ridiculous but can we please appreciate how radical it was and how -important- it was I mean I’m probably preaching to the choir here on Tumblr but. Damn. That was a big fucking deal.

― Emily Brontë
Every character in star trek who isn’t seen and their species isn’t mentioned? Denobulan.
Prosecutor: why do you say that the defendant is innocent?
Spock: James T Kirk is too perfect to do wrong
I HAVE BEEN POINTING OUT THIS MOMENT FOR YEARS! AND FINALLY A GIFSET TO ILLUSTRATE MY PAIN!
#I absolutely adore this relationship #because although we don’t see them interact very often #every time they do it’s kind and funny #mostly in Scotty’s side but still #Besides Jim Scotty is the only crew member that never gets irritated by Spock #He just lets him do whatever he does #and never criticizes Spock for being too alien or too Vulcan #It’s just Mr Spock and he treats him with every bit of respect and kindness that he treats everyone else #I love Scotty so much (quality commentary from pywren)
